13/9/2023: The UN Secretary-General has given a clear message for the gathering of 193 Member States for the UN General Assembly opening in New York: “This is not a time for posturing or positioning.” He laid out the stall for next week’s key summits, on climate, investment for development, health challenges and specific regional crises.

9/9/2023: The African Union was made a permanent member of the G20, comprising the world's richest and most powerful countries, at the recent summit in New Delhi. The African Union, a continental body of 55 member states, now has the same status as the European Union.

4/8/2023: Just over a week after Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted in a coup, prices are rising in the impoverished and landlocked Sahel nation. The Economic Community of West African States has slapped severe sanctions on Niger in response to the coup, including a number of border closures.

Mass emigration is leaving huge gaps in Africa’s health sector

15/6/2023: According to the World Health Organization Africa has a ratio of 1.55 health workers — physicians, nurses, and midwives — per 1,000 people, barely a third of the recommended ratio needed to deliver essential health services. Some African countries are working to ban the emigration of health practitioners.

Why low-income nations are cracking under debt pressure

6/6/2023: Debt interest payments for the world’s poorest 28 nations have doubled over the last decade, according to World Bank data. The Bank is calling for creditors from the Group of 20 major economies to offer debt relief to these countries.
