Recent news and opinion about World Population

China’s population falls for first time since 1961

17/1/2023: China's population fell last year, a historic turn that is expected to mark the start of a long period of decline in its citizen numbers. The largest drop since the last year of China's Great Famine lends weight to predictions that India will become the world's most populous nation this year.

Africa’s population boom may boost economy

27/11/2022:  African nations, especially sub-Saharan countries, are the main driver of growth of the world's population beyond 8 billion. Africa's potential for economic growth and its relationship with the rest of the world could change drastically.

UN sees bigger concerns than 8 billion population

15/11/2022: As the global population hits 8 billion, the head of the UN Population Fund is careful not to sound alarmist. COVID-19, the Ukraine war, and climate change are sobering reminders that hard-fought gains in development can easily be upended.

World population hits 8 billion but growth is slowing

11/11/2022: Global population is about to reach 8 billion, a mere 11 years after it reached 7 billion. There is debate as to whether this milestone is a threat to stability or a cause for celebration.

What future for a world of 8 billion?

11/7/2022: The future growth of world population will take place mostly in low-income and lower-middle-income countries. Each member of the human population, expected to surpass 8 billion in mid-November 2022, is part of a common humanity that aspires to a fulfilling life. Yet many inequalities persist and are deepening, both within and across countries and regions.

World population to reach 8 billion in November 2022

11/7/2022: The global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, having dropped below 1 per cent in 2020, according to latest UN projections. The world’s population could grow to around 9.7 billion in 2050, projected to peak at around 10.4 billion during the 2080s. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected global life expectancy which fell to 71.0 years in 2021.

China’s population is about to shrink

29/5/2022: After four extraordinary decades in which China’s population has swelled from 660 million to 1.4 billion, its population is on track to turn down this year, for the first time since the great famine of 1959-1961.

Global population growth and sustainable development

23/2/2022: Most of the world's future population growth will take place in developing countries, a feature of demographic transition that is both a sign of success and a challenge to be met. One of the key findings of a new report by the UN's Population Division.

$835 million needed for urgent sexual and reproductive health care

13/12/2021: The UN Population Fund is appealing for $835 million in 2022 to reach 54.5 million women and girls in 61 countries with life-saving sexual and reproductive health services. The countries with the greatest need are Yemen and Syria.

Climate change with 8 billion humans

23/11/2021: The recent COP26 negotiations made almost no reference to the impact of population growth on climate change. With the global population expected to reach eight billion in 2023 too many governments are introducing policies to encourage larger families.
