5/12/2024: A report by Amnesty International concludes that Israel has committed and is continuing to commit genocide against Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip. Israel has acted with total impunity in the wake of the deadly Hamas-led attacks in October 2023.

1/12/2024: A British-backed UN Security Council draft resolution calling for a ceasefire in the civil war across Sudan was supported by 14 of the 15 Council members but vetoed by Russia. The UK’s foreign minister called the veto a “disgrace.”

21/11/2024: Conflict-affected areas across the world have grown 65% since 2021 to encompass 4.6% of the entire global landmass, up from 2.8% three years ago, according to the Conflict Intensity Index. The Middle East and Ukraine remain the most intense theatres of war. However, Africa’s ‘conflict corridor,’ which now spans 4,000 miles from Mali in the west to Somalia in the east, has doubled in size since 2021.

21/11/2024: The International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants against senior Israeli leaders and a Hamas official, despite strong opposition. Israel has signed but not ratified the ICC treaty.

20/11/2024: The Biden administration’s decision to transfer antipersonnel landmines to Ukraine has been criticised by Human Rights Watch. A majority of the world’s countries rejected landmines decades ago due to their indiscriminate nature. Russia has used antipersonnel landmines widely in Ukraine since its full-scale invasion in 2022.

20/11/2024: The international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines is weakened by the actions of countries such as Russia and Myanmar that are not parties, according to the Landmine Monitor 2024 report. A total of 164 countries have joined the treaty, including all NATO members except the United States.

14/11/2024: A new report by Human Rights Watch examines how Israeli authorities’ conduct has led to the displacement of over 90 percent of the population of Gaza and the widespread destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure. The report calls on governments to impose sanctions and halt weapons sales to Israel.

7/11/2024: Ethiopia is about to start investigating crimes reported in a brutal war that engulfed the north of the country from 2020 to 2022. But trust is at an all-time low and survivors feel forgotten. An earlier UN investigation concluded that all sides committed war crimes.

31/10/2024: Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), a nonprofit specializing in conflict-related data collection, has recorded  nearly 19,000 deaths in the first 15 months of the conflict in Sudan. They estimate an additional 43,500 deaths caused by indirect factors such as the absence of emergency care, the breakdown of vaccination programs and a lack of essential food and medicine.

31/5/2024: A statement by Principals of the UN's Inter-Agency Standing Committee warns that more than 800,000 civilians are bracing for an imminent large-scale attack in the city of Al Fasher. They fear a nightmare scenario in which famine will take hold in large parts of Sudan and more people will flee to neighbouring countries.
