Proposed US landmine transfers gravely threaten civilians
20/11/2024: The Biden administration’s decision to transfer antipersonnel landmines to Ukraine has been criticised by Human Rights Watch. A majority of the world’s countries rejected landmines decades ago due to their indiscriminate nature. Russia has used antipersonnel landmines widely in Ukraine since its full-scale invasion in 2022.

New landmine casualties show need to support Mine Ban Treaty
20/11/2024: The international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines is weakened by the actions of countries such as Russia and Myanmar that are not parties, according to the Landmine Monitor 2024 report. A total of 164 countries have joined the treaty, including all NATO members except the United States.

Sudan’s civil war has left at least 62,000 dead
31/10/2024: Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED), a nonprofit specializing in conflict-related data collection, has recorded nearly 19,000 deaths in the first 15 months of the conflict in Sudan. They estimate an additional 43,500 deaths caused by indirect factors such as the absence of emergency care, the breakdown of vaccination programs and a lack of essential food and medicine.

31/5/2024: A statement by Principals of the UN's Inter-Agency Standing Committee warns that more than 800,000 civilians are bracing for an imminent large-scale attack in the city of Al Fasher. They fear a nightmare scenario in which famine will take hold in large parts of Sudan and more people will flee to neighbouring countries.

World court orders Israel to halt military operations in Rafah

Biden should oppose US sanctions on ICC
23/5/2024: Over 100 human rights and civil society groups have signed a letter to the US President calling on him to oppose threats of punitive actions against the International Criminal Court. Although the US is not a member of the ICC, Republican and Democratic administrations have supported the Court in specific cases. The Court is seeking arrest warrants for three leaders of Hamas and two senior Israeli officials.

21/5/2024: The International Criminal Court’s decision to seek warrants on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has triggered a strong backlash both from the Biden administration and a group of pro-Israeli Senators in the US Congress. The names in the ICC arrest warrants also include leaders of Hamas.
